Consistently ranked one of the World’s Top 100 universities and Top 25 schools outside of the US, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem invites international students to Israel to experience the outstanding, first-class overseas study abroad programs offered at the Rothberg International School.
Division of Undergraduate Studies
The flexible Undergraduate Study Abroad Program, extending over one semester or a full year, is open to students who have completed at least one year of university. Participants benefit from a broad selection of courses in the areas of Jewish, Israel and Middle Eastern Studies (including Arabic); brain and behavioral sciences; business; and more. Options are available to conduct a supervised independent study project or to participate in a supervised internship. Students initially study Hebrew intensively in an Ulpan, before commencing the program.
Recent high school graduates can enroll in the Division’s Freshman/Academic Gap Program.
Special programs include an honors program in which participants take Hebrew University courses taught in English with Israeli students; an Arabic immersion program; two programs run jointly with the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance for music and dance majors; and an art program in partnership with the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design.
The Division has continued to develop new programs that are now being marketed: Jerusalem Film, in partnership with the Sam Spiegel School of Film and Television; Journalism and the Media in Contemporary Israel; and Dynamics of the Middle East. Together with the University’s Center for Bioengineering, the Division is offering a new program for advanced science students: Bioengineering and Systems Biology.
Division of Graduate Studies
The Division of Graduate Studies offers degree and non-degree programs in conjunction with various departments in the Hebrew University faculties of Humanities, Social Sciences, Law and Dental Medicine, as well as the School of Social Work and Social Welfare. Courses are taught in English by members of the Hebrew University faculty and distinguished visitors. In addition to taking seminars, students may set up tutorials, internships, special projects, and/or pursue their own research under the guidance and supervision of Hebrew University faculty.
Many of the master’s degree programs in the Division can now be completed in one year (i.e., three consecutive semesters including the new summer semester). The M.A. program in Jewish Education is reopening in that format in the fall. The RIS is continuing to cooperate with other Hebrew University units in offering innovative graduate programs, e.g. the new LL.M. in International Business Law and Intellectual Property and the fellowship program in Neuroscience at the Edmond and Lily Safra Center for Brain Sciences.
Summer Courses and Special Programs
The RIS offers intensive short-term programs designed to provide students with a stimulating academic experience, including opportunities to live and breathe the subject matter, throughout the year.
Accredited summer courses are conducted in English in the following areas: Israel and Jewish Studies, Middle Eastern Studies, Peace and Conflict Studies, International Law, Jerusalem Studies, Archaeology, Economics, and Trauma and Resilience. In addition, language instruction is offered in Colloquial and Modern Standard Arabic and Biblical Hebrew.
Special academic programs are developed and implemented in conjunction with universities, institutions, and organizations from around the world. These tailor-made programs, which vary in duration, intensity, focus and timeline, generally consist of lectures, seminars, study trips throughout Israel and complementary extracurricular activities.
Preparatory Program–Mechina
The Preparatory Program–Mechina is designed for recent high school graduates who wish to become fluent in Hebrew and to pursue undergraduate studies in Israel. In addition to serving as a gateway to Hebrew-speaking Israeli society, this year-long program opens doors to the Hebrew University and other academic institutions in Israel. A supportive environment helps the Mechina students to become independent in a new country, culture and academic system.
